Ingredients
Meatballs
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon low sodium soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger (or ¼ teaspoon ground ginger)
- 3 green onions (white and light green parts only, chopped)
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ cup Panko bread crumbs
- 1 pound ground turkey (93% lean)
Sweet and Sour Glaze
- ¼ cup hoisin sauce
- ¼ cup honey
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar (or other white vinegar)
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare: Preheat your oven to 400° F. Lightly grease a rimmed baking sheet with olive oil, canola oil, or avocado oil to prevent sticking.
- Mix meatball base: In a large bowl, combine the egg, soy sauce, 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce, minced garlic, ginger, chopped green onions, salt, pepper, and Panko bread crumbs. Stir well with a fork until fully mixed.
- Add turkey: Add the ground turkey to the bowl and gently mix with your hands until the ingredients are just combined to maintain tenderness.
- Form meatballs: Shape the mixture into roughly 1 ½-inch meatballs, about 18 total, using slightly damp hands if the mixture sticks. Place them spaced evenly but not touching on the greased baking sheet.
- Bake meatballs: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-16 minutes, until cooked through. The internal temperature should read at least 165° F. Optionally, brush some glaze on the meatballs during the last minute of baking for added flavor.
- Prepare glaze: While baking, whisk the hoisin sauce, honey, and rice vinegar together in a small bowl until smooth to create the sweet and sour glaze.
- Serve: Drizzle the glaze over the meatballs or serve it on the side for dipping. Enjoy alongside brown or white rice, noodles, and your choice of sautéed or roasted vegetables, or serve as a tasty appetizer with toothpicks.
Notes
- Use 93% lean ground turkey for the best texture and lower fat content.
- For easier meatball shaping, keep your hands damp to prevent sticking.
- Check internal temperature with a meat thermometer to ensure safety.
- Glaze can be double-prepared for extra sauciness.
- These meatballs freeze well, store cooked and glazed separately for best results.
