These flavorful shrimp burgers are a delicious twist on traditional burgers, featuring finely chopped shrimp mixed with savory seasonings and Parmesan, pan-seared to golden perfection, and finished in the oven for a juicy interior. Served with a zesty homemade sauce and fresh toppings on toasted buns, they make a perfect quick and impressive meal.

Ingredients

Shrimp Burgers

  • 2 pounds raw shrimp (peeled, deveined, and patted dry)
  • 3/4 cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons mayo
  • 2 tablespoons dill
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Butter (for cooking)

Serving

  • Burger buns
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Avocado

Sauce

  • 1 cup mayo
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup sweet relish
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning

Instructions

  1. Prepare the shrimp: Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to a food processor and pulse until finely chopped but still textured, avoiding pureeing them completely to maintain some bite in the burgers.
  2. Mix burger ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the chopped shrimp with Italian breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan, finely chopped red onion, minced garlic, egg, mayo, dill, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, lemon zest, Old Bay seasoning, paprika, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until everything is evenly incorporated.
  3. Form patties: Divide the shrimp mixture into 6 equal portions and shape each into a burger patty, pressing firmly to hold them together.
  4. Sear patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and melt a generous amount of butter. Place the patties into the skillet and sear them on each side for 3-4 minutes until they develop a golden brown crust.
  5. Finish cooking in oven: Transfer the seared patties to a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for 8-10 minutes to cook thoroughly while retaining juiciness.
  6. Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, mix together mayo, ketchup, sweet relish, hot sauce, and Cajun seasoning until smooth and well combined.
  7. Assemble the burgers: Toast the burger buns to your liking. Place a cooked shrimp patty on each bun, then add desired toppings such as lettuce, tomato, and avocado. Spread the prepared sauce liberally and serve the shrimp burgers hot.

Notes

  • Make sure not to over-process the shrimp in the food processor to keep a nice texture in the burgers.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, increase the hot sauce or add slices of jalapeño to the toppings.
  • These burgers can be made ahead and reheated in the oven for a quick meal.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute Italian breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs.
  • Butter adds richness to the patties when searing, but you can use a neutral oil if preferred.
  • Ensure the internal temperature of the shrimp patties reaches 145°F (63°C) for safe consumption.
