Ingredients
Beef and Gravy
- 3 lb beef steak or roast, thinly sliced (into about 2-3″ strips)
- 2 cups water
- 2 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 packet au jus gravy mix (1 oz. packet)
- 1 packet brown gravy mix (1 oz. packet)
- Salt & pepper to taste (about 1/2 tsp each recommended)
Sandwich Assembly
- 8 hoagie rolls or French bread rolls
- 8 provolone cheese slices (or more for extra cheesiness)
- Butter, optional (for buttering bread rolls before toasting)
Instructions
- Prepare Beef Mixture: Place the thinly sliced beef, onion powder, garlic powder, au jus gravy mix, brown gravy mix, and water into the crockpot insert and stir briefly to combine all ingredients evenly.
- Cook Beef: Cover the crockpot and cook on HIGH for 4 hours or on LOW for 6-8 hours until the beef is fork tender and flavorful.
- Season Beef: Stir the cooked beef and add salt and pepper to taste (approximately 1/2 teaspoon each) for final seasoning adjustment.
- Toast Rolls: Preheat the broiler on HIGH. Place open hoagie rolls on a foil-lined baking sheet, buttering the insides if desired. Broil for 1-2 minutes until the insides are lightly browned. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Remove top buns from the toasted rolls and set aside. Place beef strips on the bottom halves, then top with provolone cheese slices.
- Melt Cheese: Broil the sandwiches again for about 1 minute or until the cheese has melted perfectly.
- Serve: Place the top buns back on each sandwich and serve with a side of the au jus gravy from the crockpot for dipping. Enjoy with optional sides like veggies, rice, or potatoes.
Notes
- Use a thinly sliced beef roast or steak for best texture that absorbs the gravy flavors well.
- Au jus and brown gravy mix packets can usually be found in the soup/gravy aisle of grocery stores.
- Broiling the rolls and melting cheese under the broiler requires close attention to avoid burning.
- Butter the buns before toasting for extra flavor and a golden crust.
- You can also bake the rolls at 350°F for 5-7 minutes as an alternative to broiling.
- Serve sandwiches with au jus gravy on the side for dipping to enhance flavor and moistness.
