Description
This 15-Minute Easy Blueberry Compote is a simple, flavorful topping made with fresh blueberries, brown sugar or maple syrup, lemon, ginger, and warm spices. Perfect for enhancing pancakes, yogurt, desserts, or breakfast dishes, this compote is cooked on the stovetop and can be enjoyed warm or chilled.
Ingredients
Blueberry Compote
- 2 cups (195 grams) Fresh Blueberries (about one pint; if using frozen, thaw before cooking)
- 2 – 3 tablespoons Brown Sugar or Maple Syrup (use 3 tablespoons if blueberries are tart)
- 1 Lemon, zested
- 1 teaspoon Lemon Juice
- 2 tablespoons Water
- 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 teaspoon Fresh Ginger, grated
- 1/4 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, add the fresh blueberries, brown sugar or maple syrup, lemon zest and juice, and water. Stir the mixture to combine all ingredients evenly.
- Simmer Mixture: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to medium-low and allow the compote to simmer for 10-13 minutes. Stir occasionally, mashing some of the berries gently with the back of a spoon as they soften, while leaving some berries whole for texture. For a thinner, syrup-like compote, cook closer to 10 minutes.
- Check for Thickness: As the compote cooks, it will begin to thicken. Lower the heat to low towards the end of cooking. When stirring, you will notice a visible trail on the bottom of the pan, indicating that the compote has reached the desired thickness.
- Finish and Cool: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and grated fresh ginger. Let the compote cool slightly in the pan; it will thicken more as it cools. Serve warm or transfer to a container for later use.
- Store Properly: For storage, refrigerate the compote in an airtight container for up to one week. To freeze, cool to room temperature then store in the freezer for up to one month.
- Reheating: Gently rewarm the compote on the stovetop over low heat for 1-2 minutes or microwave for about 30 seconds. If the compote is too thick when reheated, add a splash of water to reach desired consistency.
Notes
- If using frozen blueberries, thaw them before cooking to ensure even heating.
- Adjust sugar or maple syrup amount based on the sweetness of your blueberries; use more if they are tart.
- The lemon zest adds a bright citrus flavor, while lemon juice balances sweetness and helps set the compote.
- Fresh ginger and cinnamon add warm, spicy undertones—feel free to adjust or omit based on preference.
- The compote will thicken further as it cools, so do not overcook it if you want a saucier texture.
- This compote can be used as a topping for pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, yogurt, or desserts, or mixed into smoothies.
