Description

A bold and savory appetizer featuring tender edamame pods coated in a spicy-sweet miso glaze—perfect for game nights, gatherings, or an easy snack with a kick.

Ingredients

12 oz (350 g) frozen edamame in shells

3 Tbsp red miso paste

1 Tbsp sambal oelek chili paste (adjust to taste)

2 tsp sake

1½ tsp soy sauce

1½ tsp mirin

½ tsp brown sugar

½ tsp sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add edamame and cook according to package directions, shortening the time by 45–60 seconds. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together miso, sambal oelek, sake, soy sauce, mirin, and brown sugar until smooth.
  3. Heat sesame oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sauce and stir until warmed through.
  4. Add the edamame and toss well to coat all pods evenly with the sauce.
  5. Transfer to a serving bowl and serve warm.

Notes

  • Increase sambal oelek or use sriracha for more spice.
  • Substitute coconut sugar for brown sugar for a nuanced sweetness.
  • Sauté garlic in oil for a flavor boost.
  • Char pods in a wok or cast-iron skillet before saucing for a smoky twist.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds or red pepper flakes before serving.
