Description

These homemade hamburger buns are soft, slightly sweet, and perfect for burgers or sandwiches. Made with eggs and shortening, they rise beautifully and bake golden and fluffy every time.

Ingredients

2 cups warm water

4 Tbsp dry yeast

½ cup sugar

1 Tbsp salt

2 eggs

½ cup shortening

6¼ cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large bowl.
  2. Whisk in sugar, salt, eggs, and shortening until well combined.
  3. Gradually stir in flour and knead about 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes until doubled in size.
  5. Divide dough in half, then each half into 16 pieces (32 total). Roll into balls.
  6. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet, 2 inches apart. Let rise until nearly tripled in size.
  7. Bake on lower rack at 350°F for 10–12 minutes until golden brown. Cool before slicing.

Notes

  • Brush with egg wash and add sesame seeds before baking for a classic finish.
  • Substitute butter for shortening for richer buns.
  • For whole wheat buns, replace half the flour with whole wheat flour.
  • Shape smaller for sliders; reduce bake time accordingly.
  • Store in airtight container up to 2 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
