Description

This Ground Beef Cheesesteak recipe recreates the iconic Philly cheesesteak flavors in an affordable, easy-to-make stovetop dish. Ground beef is seasoned and browned, then combined with sautéed onions and green bell peppers, and finished with a creamy blend of melted cream cheese. Served on toasted hamburger or hoagie buns and topped with provolone cheese, this sandwich is a delicious twist on the classic cheesesteak that’s perfect for a quick family meal.

Ingredients

Meat and Seasoning

  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 or leaner)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Vegetables and Dairy

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, cubed

Bread and Cheese

  • 8 hamburger buns or hoagie buns
  • 8 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese or cheese whiz)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Cook while breaking the meat into small pieces with a spatula until browned, about 7 to 9 minutes. Drain any excess grease from the pan.
  2. Sauté Onions and Peppers: Push the cooked beef to the edges of the skillet. Add the salted butter to the center, then the thinly sliced onion and green bell pepper. Stir occasionally and cook until the vegetables soften and develop slight browning, approximately 5 to 6 minutes.
  3. Add and Melt Cream Cheese: Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cube the cream cheese and add it to the skillet. Fold the cream cheese into the beef and vegetable mixture until melted and fully incorporated, creating a creamy sauce.
  4. Assemble the Sandwiches: Turn off the heat. If desired, toast the buns for best texture and flavor. Spoon about 1/2 cup of the beef mixture onto each bun. Top each with a slice of provolone cheese. Serve the sandwiches immediately while hot and cheesy.

Notes

  • To enhance flavor, toast the buns before assembling the sandwiches.
  • You can substitute provolone with American cheese or cheese whiz for a different take.
  • Drain excess grease from the beef to prevent a soggy sandwich.
  • This recipe yields 8 sandwiches, perfect for a family meal or small gathering.
  • For a leaner version, use ground beef with less fat, but keep in mind the richness of the cream cheese adds moisture.
