Ingredients
Sauce
- 1/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce or tamari
- 3 tablespoons beef broth
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 (1-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and minced
- 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
- Dash of crushed red pepper flakes
Main Ingredients
- 1 head broccoli, cut into florets (about 4 cups)
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil or olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 yellow onion, chopped
- Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
For Garnish and Serving
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
- Sliced green onions, for garnish
- Cooked rice or noodles, for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, beef broth, minced garlic, honey, cornstarch, minced fresh ginger, toasted sesame oil, and a dash of crushed red pepper flakes until smooth. Set this mixture aside to be used later.
- Steam the broccoli: Place broccoli florets and 2 tablespoons of water in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cover with a lid and steam the broccoli until it turns bright green and is just tender, about 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer the broccoli to a plate and set aside.
- Cook the ground beef and onion: In the same skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of avocado or olive oil over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and chopped onion, cooking until the beef is no longer pink and is nicely browned, about 5 to 7 minutes. Stir and break up the beef as it cooks. Season with kosher salt and black pepper to taste. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Combine beef with sauce and broccoli: Reduce the heat to low and pour the prepared sauce over the cooked beef mixture. Cook for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and coats the meat evenly. Add the steamed broccoli back into the skillet and stir gently to combine everything well.
- Garnish and serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired. Serve immediately alongside cooked rice or noodles for a complete meal.
Notes
- You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
- If you prefer a spicier dish, increase the crushed red pepper flakes according to taste.
- Use tamari instead of soy sauce to make the dish gluten-free.
- To save time, precut broccoli florets can be used.
- Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and can be reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
