Description

This Easy Baked Aloo Tikki recipe offers a healthier twist on the classic Indian street food by baking instead of frying. Made with mashed russet potatoes combined with peas, onions, green bell pepper, and aromatic spices, these flavorful patties are lightly brushed with oil and oven-baked until golden and crispy. Perfect as a snack or appetizer, these tikkis are simple to make and sure to satisfy your cravings with less oil and guilt.

Ingredients

Vegetables and Base

  • 2 medium russet potatoes (boiled, steamed or microwaved)
  • 1/3 cup peas
  • 1/3 cup onions, chopped
  • 1/3 cup green bell pepper, chopped

Spices and Seasoning

  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Pinch of red chili pepper

Others

  • 1/3 cup flour
  • Oil for brushing

Instructions

  1. Mash and season potatoes: In a large bowl, mash the cooked and cooled potatoes thoroughly with a fork. Add chili powder, cumin, ground ginger, garlic powder, red chili pepper, and salt to taste. Mix everything well to evenly distribute the spices.
  2. Taste and adjust seasoning: Sample the potato mixture to ensure the salt and spices are balanced to your preference. Adjust as needed before proceeding.
  3. Add vegetables and flour: Incorporate the chopped onions, bell pepper, and peas into the spiced potato mixture. Stir well to combine all ingredients evenly. Next, add the flour and mix thoroughly to bind the mixture.
  4. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (220 degrees Celsius) to get it ready for baking the tikkis.
  5. Prepare the patties: Dry your hands completely and dust them lightly with flour to prevent sticking. If the mixture feels too wet or sticky, sprinkle a bit more flour. Shape small balls from the mixture, then flatten each into patties about 1/2 inch thick.
  6. Oil and arrange on tray: Using a brush, lightly coat both sides of each tikki with oil. Place the tikkis on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, spaced apart to ensure even baking.
  7. Bake until golden: Bake the tikkis in the preheated oven for approximately 30 minutes. Flip them carefully halfway through the baking time to promote even browning and crispiness on both sides.
  8. Cool and serve: Once baked and golden, remove the tikkis from the oven and allow them to cool for about 5 minutes. This resting time helps the patties firm up. Serve warm as a snack or side dish.

Notes

  • For best results, make sure the potatoes are fully cooled before mashing to prevent the mixture from becoming too sticky.
  • If you prefer a crispier texture, brush the tikkis with a little more oil before baking.
  • You can substitute all-purpose flour with chickpea flour (besan) for a gluten-free option.
  • Adjust the chili powder and red chili pepper according to your spice preference.
  • Serve with chutney or yogurt for a more authentic experience.
