Description

This easy and fresh guacamole recipe combines ripe avocados with a zesty blend of red onion, jalapeño, cilantro, and citrus juices, creating a creamy and flavorful dip perfect for chips or as a topping for your favorite dishes. Ready in just 15 minutes, it’s a quick and delicious appetizer or snack that enhances any gathering.

Ingredients

Produce

  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped red onion
  • 2 teaspoons finely chopped jalapeño
  • 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro or chives
  • 2 medium ripe avocados
  • 1 lime (plus 1 tbsp lime juice)
  • 1 lemon (or more lime juice, about 1 tbsp)

Spices & Seasonings

  • Salt (about 1/2 teaspoon total, divided)
  • Black pepper (to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Others

  • Chips (for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Make a Paste: Place the finely chopped red onion, jalapeño, and cilantro (or chives) on a cutting board. Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon of salt over the mixture. Using a knife, chop everything together finely, then mash with the back of a fork until it forms a thick paste. Use a spatula to transfer all of this paste into a mixing bowl.
  2. Add Avocado: Peel and pit the avocados, then add the flesh to the bowl with the paste. Use a fork to mash the avocado into the paste until well combined but still slightly chunky. Stir in 1 tablespoon lime juice, 1 tablespoon lemon juice (or extra lime juice), garlic powder if using, and season with additional salt and pepper to taste—typically another 1/4 teaspoon of each.
  3. Serve: Taste the guacamole with some chips to check the seasoning, remembering chips are salty. Adjust salt, pepper, lime, or lemon juice as desired. Serve immediately with chips or use as a topping for your favorite dishes.

Notes

  • Note 1: Adjust the amount of jalapeño according to your preferred spice level.
  • Note 2: Cilantro can be substituted with chives if you prefer a milder herb flavor.
  • Note 3: Use ripe avocados for the best creamy texture; they should yield slightly to gentle pressure.
  • Guacamole is best served fresh but can be refrigerated for a few hours by covering tightly to prevent browning.
  • Use fresh lime and lemon juice to add brightness and prevent avocado oxidation.
