Description

Oven-baked and irresistibly crispy, these chicken goujons are a healthier homemade alternative to frozen versions. Simple to prepare, family-friendly, and perfect for dipping.

Ingredients

600 g (1.3 lb) chicken breast, skinless and boneless (about 4 chicken breasts)

50 g (2 oz) plain flour

1 tsp paprika

2 medium free-range eggs, beaten

100 g (3.5 oz) breadcrumbs

Oil for greasing

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 ℃ (400 °F fan), 220 ℃ (425 °F conventional), or Gas Mark 7.
  2. Slice the chicken breasts into finger-shaped strips, about 2–3 cm wide.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the plain flour, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Coat each chicken strip by dipping it first into the flour mixture, then into the beaten eggs, and finally into the breadcrumbs.
  5. Alternatively, place the chicken pieces in a large lidded Tupperware container, add the flour and shake, then add the egg and shake again, followed by the breadcrumbs and one final shake.
  6. Arrange the coated chicken strips on a greased baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 20–23 minutes, or until cooked through. If the pieces are small, start checking at 15 minutes.

Notes

  • Use Panko breadcrumbs for an extra crispy coating.
  • Swap paprika with smoked paprika or cayenne pepper for a spicier kick.
  • Air-fry the goujons for an even crispier texture.
  • Add grated Parmesan to the breadcrumb mixture for extra flavor.
  • Serve with a variety of dips like honey mustard, garlic mayo, or BBQ sauce.
