Description

Crunchy butter toffee pretzels that perfectly balance sweet and salty in every crispy bite. This recipe is gluten-free and can easily be made dairy-free, making it ideal for holiday party platters, festive gifts, or an indulgent snack anytime.

Ingredients

Butter Toffee Sauce

  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Pretzels

  • 12 ounces mini gluten-free pretzels (about 340 g)

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter & Sugar: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter and brown sugar. Stir occasionally until the butter is fully melted and the mixture begins to gently boil.
  2. Cook Caramel: Continue stirring the butter-sugar mixture for a few minutes while it bubbles, until the mixture becomes smooth, creamy, and takes on a caramel consistency.
  3. Add Baking Soda and Vanilla: Remove the saucepan from heat. Immediately add the baking soda and vanilla extract, stirring briskly for about a minute. The mixture will foam and thicken slightly, enhancing the texture of the toffee.
  4. Coat Pretzels in Caramel: Place the gluten-free mini pretzels in a large bowl. Pour the hot caramel evenly over them and gently stir to coat all the pretzels without breaking them.
  5. Let Caramel Set Before Enjoying: Spread the coated pretzels in a single layer onto a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper or on a wire rack. Allow them to cool completely at room temperature. If your kitchen is warm, refrigerate them to speed up the setting process.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free version, substitute the butter with a plant-based butter alternative.
  • Store the coated pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week to maintain crunchiness.
  • Use gluten-free pretzels to keep the recipe gluten-free.
  • Be gentle when stirring the pretzels in caramel to prevent them from breaking.
  • If desired, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt over the pretzels before the caramel sets for an extra salty-sweet contrast.
